About us

Portsmouth Central Masjid (Mosque) has been established since 2002. As the name suggests, it is located in the central area of Portsmouth called Fratton. The current building had originally been a Church, but subsequently went through many different uses, till it was converted to a Masjid, Alhamdulilla (all praise to Allah). We all pray that it remains a Masjid until the end.

At the time of purchase, the building had only 1 floor which accommodated approximately 150 worshippers, and did not have adequate toilet and ablution facilities. Through the efforts of the local Muslim community, phase 1 of the major redevelopment plan was completed in 2010. In this redevelopment phase, a maisonette floor was added, and toilet and ablution facilities increased. The Masjid now easily accommodates well over 200 worshippers.

Unfortunately at the moment, there are no separate facilities for ladies. But InshaAllah, we are planning to embark on phase 2 of the redevelopment plan. In this redevelopment phase, we will endeavour to include separate facilities for ladies.

General Information;

The Masjid is open for all 5  daily prayer times. The door is normally open approximately 15 to 20 minutes prior to start of Jama’ah.

The Masjid is open to people of all faiths or no faiths to come and visit. We will be happy to answer any questions or queries. We will be happy to host group visits too. It is preferred that prior appointment is made for such visits. We politely request that both males and females dress modestly for visits.

Full Muslim burial facilities available. There is a separate building next to the Masjid containing a mortuary, wash and shrouding facilities.

Transportation links to the Masjid are reasonably good. Fratton railway station is only about a 5 minute walk away. There are no designated parking spaces for the Masjid, but there is always spaces available in surrounding streets, free but time restricted. There is free parking spaces available in the evenings and at weekends.
